The mailings facility in PhotoDeck can be used for marketing newsletters and other email promotions, and this is the focus of this article.
We have added an option that allows, when you switch the consent mode to Opt-in, to unsubscribe from your mailing list people for whom no consent has been recorded. This allows you to "clean" your mailing list and make it legal in the GDRP sense.
In addition, for the Opt-in and Opt-out modes, a mailings subscription checkbox is now also offered on your Contact page.
When sending marketing newsletters, that are by nature not linked to an ongoing project or contract, it is nowadays considered good practise to make sure each recipient indeed chose to receive those mailings. That's also a way to help manage one's own reputation as a sender, since it is important that the messages are not marked as SPAM.
In the European Union, the law goes much further than the etiquette, especially with the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It requires that explicit consent from individuals be recorded, "explicit" meaning that the person must take an action to indicate consent (e.g. pre-checked checkboxes aren't allowed).
When a customer creates an account or places an order, he can be subscribed to your mailings:
The new settings under My Business / Setup / Mailings consent let you control whether a checkbox should be displayed at all, and whether people are subscribed by default. The text can also be customized (and we encourage members to adapt it to their use!)
Did you know you can add a page on your website for people to signup to your newsletter? Simply create a new custom page, and in its settings tab, select the type "Mailings subscription page".
On this page, the same text as for the checkboxes is displayed.
If you use the mailings facility for newsletters, make sure you use the Opt-In consent level in the consent settings.
Under the upcoming GDPR, you should be able to prove that you received consent. Therefore you should treat the consent text as a miniature contract, and it should include how a person can unsubscribe from the mailings.
wYou will find in your admin space the time and date when a person gave his consent (if you modify over time the consent text, you should keep a change history so you also know what text was accepted for any person).
We'll talk more about the GDPR in a future post -- stay tuned!
